“Every Boy and Every Girl, Spice Up Your Life!”

Spice up your life – The Spice Girls

If you’re already humming, welcome to the club. If not… I don’t know how to break this to you, but you may be too young to remember the greatness that was ‘90s pop. Either way, we’re using this absolute banger from The Spice Girls to kick off today’s flavorful journey because we’re talking about exactly that: spices. And yes, fine… I’ll admit it. I was a low-key Spice Girls fan back in the day. (Still know half the lyrics. Don’t h@te me.) But before I go down a nostalgic spiral, let’s talk about how these tiny flavor bombs can actually spice up more than your food, your body, mind, and spirit included. And let’s find out what are spices used for.

Spices are the extroverts of your pantry. They show up loud, bold, and full of personality. A pinch of this, a dash of that, and suddenly your sad little Tuesday dinner is giving “main character energy.” But spices aren’t just culinary accessories, they’re cultural gold. They’ve crossed oceans, built empires, and spiced up everything from sacred rituals to grandma’s secret curry blend. They’re woven into the fabric of traditions, health systems, and memories all over the world.

(And yes, herbs, we see you too. Dried or fresh, you’re the cool, quiet sidekick with all the aromatic charm.)

What is a spice, exactly?

Let’s get nerdy for a sec. According to Merriam-Webster:

“a plant product (such as pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, or ginger) that is used to season or flavor foods and is usually comprised of seeds, fruits, bark, or rhizomes that have been dried and typically ground”

Technically correct. But also, kinda boring. For me? Spices are stories. They’re whispers from ancestors. They’re nature’s way of seasoning both your stew and your soul.

journey

My Journey into Spice

It started in culinary school, where I learned the basic spices. It wasn’t until I cooked with different chefs that I learned so much more. Each chef has their own personal favorite flavors and spices they used in their own recipes. It quickly became clear for me that there was an entire spice world out there for me to explore. Chef by chef and spice by spice I got introduced slowly into the spice world, and it really spiced up my life! (yes, pun intended) I fell in love with the flavors and scents that gave me butterflies in my stomach. A deep inner pull to explore further came to life, and of course, I did in the years to follow.

Honestly, I became that guy. The one who’d randomly blurt out, “Did you know cinnamon is actually tree bark?” at dinner parties. Or say things like “Have you heard that in Ancient China you needed a clove in your mouth when you spoke to the Emperor?” (Still do, to be honest.) Spoiler: I still don’t understand why cloves smell like Christmas but taste like punishment.

What Are Spices Used For

We all know spices taste great. But what blew my mind was how deeply healing they can be.

In Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, African traditional healing, and beyond. Spices are powerful tools for wellness. They’re used to:

  • Boost immunity
  • Support digestion
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Clear brain fog
  • And apparently, even make your ex jealous (ok maybe not that, but let’s manifest)

This wasn’t just ancient wisdom; it’s increasingly backed by science. Turmeric for inflammation. Cinnamon for blood sugar. Saffron for mood. Suddenly, your spice rack becomes a pharmacy and a therapist. And now you know what are spices used for.

The Mental Health Twist: A Personal Confession

Like a lot of us, I’ve had darker days. When life felt foggy, heavy, and stuck on loop. And while friends and family got me through, the one thing that always gave me peace was… cooking. The ritual. The rhythm. The sizzling pan, the scent of toasted cumin, it grounded me. It brought me back to my senses, literally. During my deep-dive research, I learned that spices can also support mental health. And that’s when things got really real. Mood-boosting saffron? Anti-anxiety cinnamon? Brain-loving turmeric? Suddenly, I wasn’t just cooking, I was healing. If there’s one thing I believe, it’s this:

You can’t just read or watch a show about flavor. You’ve gotta taste it, you’ve got to try it.

So, I experimented. I tried spice blends from all over the world, recreated remedies from old books, and learned what worked for me (and what definitely didn’t, looking at you, bitter fenugreek tea). Some became daily rituals. Others were one-time disasters. But even the missteps taught me how to listen to my body, my cravings, and my intuition.

So, What Did I Learn?

That spices aren’t just ingredients. They’re tools for transformation. They help us:

  • Turn food into medicine
  • Turn routines into rituals
  • Turn cooking into self-care

They invite us to slow down, to savor, and to connect with food, with culture, and most importantly, with ourselves.

This post is just the amuse-bouche. I’ll be sharing more on individual spices, their history, their benefits, and how I actually use them in my kitchen. If you’re curious, I’ve already written about what ginger is used for and what turmeric is good for. I also dive into how nutmeg and mace work their magic, and why Chinese five spice is all about balance.

Each one has its own story and personality, and trust me… they’re worth exploring. (without needing a PhD in turmericology).
